Introducing gistmint
What gistmint does today, how credits and the Pro plan work, and what it does not do yet.
The gistmint team ·
gistmint is a small tool with one job: turning videos and recordings into text you can actually use. This post explains what it does today, how pricing works, and — just as important — what it does not do yet.
What gistmint does
YouTube transcripts. Paste a YouTube link into the YouTube transcript tool and you get the full transcript, with timestamps when timing is available. You can copy it or download it as plain text, timestamped text, SRT or VTT. The YouTube caption downloader and subtitle downloader are the same workflow, aimed at people who want the captions as a file.
AI transcription of your own files. Upload a video or audio file — MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV and more — and an AI model listens to it and writes it down. There is one page per common job: transcribe audio, audio to text, video to text, MP3 to text, M4A and video transcription. The file previews in your browser first; nothing is transcribed until you press the button.
Free subtitle tools. Converting and editing subtitle files happens right in your browser, with no account and no credits. You can find them under Tools on the all tools page.
How pricing works
There are two plans, and every number below is the one the site actually charges.
- Free — $0. Every new account gets 5 credits once, when it signs up. They are a one-time grant: they do not refill daily or monthly.
- Pro — $9.99 per month. You get 600 credits every month, and AI transcription is included.
What a transcript costs:
- A YouTube video that already has captions costs 1 credit.
- A YouTube video without captions, or a file you upload, has to be transcribed by an AI model. That costs 4 credits per minute of audio, rounded up to the whole minute, and it is only available on Pro.
- If a transcription fails, the credits reserved for it are released. You pay for transcripts that come back, not for attempts.
Copying, downloading and re-exporting a transcript you already have costs nothing, and neither do the free subtitle tools. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
What gistmint does not do (yet)
We would rather say this plainly than let a pricing table imply it:
- No bulk, playlist or channel transcription. One video or file at a time for now.
- No public API yet. If you need one, the API page explains where it stands.
- No video summaries yet. The video summarizer is being built for the Pro plan; today you can read or skim the full transcript instead.
- No video editing. gistmint gives you text and subtitle files; it is not a video editor.
- No public pages of other people's transcripts. The transcripts you make are for you; we do not publish them as pages on the site.
If you want to start, the step-by-step tutorial shows how to get your first YouTube transcript — with gistmint or with YouTube's own transcript panel.
